Stay 7 nights to immerse yourself in this beautiful region with the emphasis on gastronomy, sampling the best local specialities including wines, cognacs and gourmet restaurants – join us for a tour through one of the great wine lists of the world.

Saturday On arrival, settle into your cottage and enjoy tea and cakes in the garden. In the evening, a welcome 4 course dinner with aperos, wine, coffee and cognac is served in the Manor House.

Sunday Take a scenic drive to the chic Il de Re, driving over the famous toll bridge to take in the atmosphere of the bustling harbours lined with art galleries and boutiques, cafes and restaurants. Enjoy a delicious seafood lunch at L’Ecailler (La Flotte) or Georges (St Martin) - both renowned restaurants. In the afternoon, if you wish, drive into La Rochelle and discover the “Vieux Port” guarded by magnificent towers and wander through the ancient arcaded shopping centre.

In the evening, relax and enjoy a 2 course supper with wine served in your cottage

Monday Enjoy a leisurely breakfast, then drive into Cognac to visit the world famous Remy Martin Cognac House. During your 4 hr visit with your personal ambassador, tour the historic house from the centuries old cellars to the intimate lounges, the stages in cognac production, a tasting of 3 cognacs accompanied by gourmet canapes, and a 3 course gourmet lunch served in a private dining room. 

In the afternoon explore the ancient streets and mansions, museums and Romanesque architecture of Cognac. Stop off for a coffee in one of the many cafes clustered around the fountain in the centre of town and watch the world go by, or browse the boutiques and shops.

In the evening, enjoy a 2 course supper with wine served in your cottage.

Tuesday A scenic run to visit to the Roman amphitheatre  and museum at Les Bouchards, Rouilliac, before continuing onto the picturesque town of Verteuil sur Charente, where the magnificent Chateau, with its’ breathtaking turrets, looms over the village. Lunch will be taken in the delightful Jeux du Pots restaurant, a charming 19th century building overlooking the river.

In the evening, a 2 course supper with wine will be served in your cottage.

Wednesday Take a slow scenic route through the Saintonge countryside, a land of Romanesque churches and picturesque villages built from the local limestone including Taillbourg and St Savinien before stopping for lunch at Le Logis du Pere, a former fortified farmhouse which dates from 1392 and was converted into a superb 4star restaurant and hotel in 2015.

After lunch continue to Rochefort, to visit the Corderie Royale built in 1666 to make the rigging for the great warships, the Maritime Museum and the arsenal which includes the oldest masonry dry dock in the world. The docks where L’Hermione, General Lafayette’s frigate,(in which he sailed to the Americas in 1780) has been reconstructed using traditional methods.

In the evening a 2 course supper with wine will be served in your cottage.

Thursday Take the ferry from Royan to the Pointes de Grave, in the Medoc, and drive through the countryside that reads like a wine carte! Stopping for guided private tours and tastings at Chateau Lynch-Bages and either the fairy tale Chateau Pichon Longueville (both Grand Cru Classe) or the Chateau du Tertre (Grand Cru Classe Margaux). 

Lunch will be taken in the gastronomic restaurant Le Saint-Julien. Return via the ferry to Blaye, with its’ famous citadelle designed by Vauban in the 17th century.

In the evening a 2 course supper with wine will be served in your cottage.

Friday Take a beautiful scenic run, which follows the River Charente.  Enjoy sweeping vistas of vineyards and beautiful chateaux, on roads just made for sports cars!  Visit Bourg Charente, Jarnac on the river, home of Courvoisier, then on to Bassac with it's 1,000 year old abbey and St Simenon -Village des Gabariers.

Stop to marvel at the Chateau de Bouteville, a national monument, where the Black Prince stayed during the 100 years war, currently in the process of being restored. Then take the opportunity to visit the producers of Baume de Bouteville, a balsamic condiment aged in Cognac barrels which is a favourite of Michelin starred chefs and loved by gourmets, for a tour and tasting.

In the evening, your farewell dinner will be taken in La Distillerie, the beautiful brasserie at Chais Monnet, Cognac.


The tariff of £1,695 per person (based on 4 sharing one cottage in May, June or September) includes:
